Behind the Lens: Films on Filmmaking
Singin’ in the Rain

BEHIND THE LENS: FILMS ON FILMMAKING: For as long as humanity has been making movies, we have also been making movies about how movies are made. This meta-cinema gives filmmakers–famously very humble people–the ability to mythologize their own struggles, from battling with finicky actors to funding nightmares, all while showing audiences exactly how the sausage is made. It’s an excuse to air industry dirty laundry under the guise of art and a love letter to the chaos of creation. As we ring in the new year, the Roxy Theater celebrates the art of filmmaking with a lineup of the best films ever made about making films.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN: Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor star in Singin' in the Rain, one of the greatest and most successful musicals ever filmed - filled with memorable songs, lavish routines and Kelly's fabulous song-and-dance number performed in the rain. Set during the advent of "talkies," Don Lockwood has risen to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era - paired with the beautiful, jealous and dumb Lina Lamont. And when Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden, Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures, Lockwood finds his career in jeopardy after audiences laugh when they hear Lamont speak in her shrill voice for the first time... until the studio decides to use Selden to dub her voice.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre celebrates this classic film with a LIVE onstage version of Singin’ in The Rain JR, also rated G and featuring a cast of 8-12th grade students, February 7-9, 2025. Before the 5:00 PM movie at the Roxy on Sunday, January 26th, meet and mingle with the cast before you watch the film and sign up for a chance to win 2 tickets (a $34 value) to one of the live performances at MCT!
