To Illuminate the Darkest Day of the Year

Sandman’s Solstice Spectacular

Forget about ol’ St. Nick for a day, Sandman’s Solstice Spectacular is coming to The Roxy Theater on December 21st from 1-4 p.m.! The multimedia event will mark both winter solstice and the release of Chris Sand’s NON-JUDGMENT DAY album. The show will feature dance, cinema, warmth, good cheer, and the music of many talented Montana musicians.

Jay Burd (they/them) will intersperse mischief throughout the night. Whether clowning, dancing, singing, or doing a bawdy burlesque, this human has wings.

R’Know, a hip-hop luminary, home-town hero, and former athlete at Sentinel High and the University of Montana, will open the show with two original raps. R’Know contributed his musical skills to two Non-Judgment Day tracks.

Then Naomi Siegel and MJ Williams, award-winning and internationally recognized jazz artists, will collaborate on a short set of unforgettable songs. Both women are featured in NON- JUDGMENT DAY: Siegel plays New Orleans’ style trombone on “Ain’t All Good,” and Williams scats on “Hard Lessons.”

Missoula’s Chris Sand will then release his latest album, NON-JUDGMENT DAY, with a live rendition of the album’s songs. Backed by Ian Smith, Grace Decker, Caroline Keys, Nate Biehl, and Gibson Hartwell—the core album musicians—Sand will also be joined by others who contributed, including Foreshadow, R’Know, Naomi Siegel, MJ Williams, Maria Zepeda, Lee Rizzo, Cole Grant, Aaron Jennings, and possibly more.

Foreshadow, who produced most of the album, will close the event with five original songs that merge his deep Salish-Blackfeet roots with the rhythm and beats of modern hip-hop. He’ll also screen his stunning new music video, “Bring Them Home,” a tribute to the Blackfeet Tribe’s successful effort to return an original herd of bison to the Blackfeet Reservation.

NON-JUDGMENT DAY is Sand’s 15th CD and the final installment of his American Road Trip- tych, an original musical project that began with American Road Trip in 2016. Part 2 was Magic Beans, Sand’s first children’s album, released in 2022.
