A River Runs Through It

The Maclean brothers, Paul (Brad Pitt) and Norman (Craig Sheffer), live a relatively idyllic life in rural Montana, spending much of their time fly fishing. The sons of a minister (Tom Skerritt), the boys eventually part company when Norman moves east to attend college, leaving his rebellious brother to find trouble back home. When Norman finally returns, the siblings resume their fishing outings, and assess both where they've been and where they're going.

The Roxy is proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Norman Maclean's novella with multiple screenings of Robert Redford's magnificent film adaptation. Please note: the February 6 screening is sponsored by Traveler's Rest, and the February 8 screening will be preceded by a Roxy Book Club discussion in the Lounge at 2:00 PM.

In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing." This first line of the Norman Maclean's story, A River Runds Through It captures the essential themes of family, spirtuality, and the outdoors that lie at the center of two generations of family stories. Home Waters by Norman's son, John N. Maclean, continues to explore these themes, as does John's introduction to the centennial edition of Ernest Hemingway's Big Two-Hearted River. On February 8, join Roxy Book Club to discuss these famous fish stories and uncover the meaning that lies under the surface, like trout in the Big Blackfoot River.
