THE INVISIBLE SHIELD, EPISODE 1

Public health has transformed human life, silently protecting us from disease and fatalities.
Interventions large and small – from quarantine to crosswalks to vaccines to modern sanitation – have emerged over time, allowing society to flourish and keeping illness, injury and death at bay. These efforts have helped to double our lifespans in the modern age and enabled us to drink clean water, eat uncontaminated food and breathe clean air. But decades of underinvestment and neglect have weakened the safety net. When a global pandemic emerges in 2020, the once invisible shield of public health finds itself overburdened and at the center of a heated debate about its purpose and its role in society at large. Public health officials work against long odds and a ticking clock to implement a playbook that has been adapted and refined since the fourteenth century.
