This September, the Roxy is thrilled to celebrate the work of one of American cinema's greatest living filmmakers: Paul Thomas Anderson. Running throughout Anderson's films is a preoccupation with the spiritual history of California; accordingly, we're showing four of his greatest films in chronological order, foregrounding Anderson's newest film (another California-set drama, and his second Thomas Pynchon adaptation), One Battle After Another, before its September 26 release.
Missoula Valley PTA: Four Films by Paul Thomas Anderson
There Will Be Blood - September 3 and 7
The Master in 35mm - September 10 and 14
Inherent Vice - September 17 and 21
Boogie Nights in 35mm - September 24 and 28
Inherent Vice: In a California beach community, private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) tends to work his cases through a smoky haze of marijuana. One day, Shasta, a former lover, arrives out of the blue to plead for Doc's help; it seems that Shasta's current beau, rich real-estate tycoon Mikey Wolfmann, has a wife who may be plotting to commit him to a mental hospital. When Mickey and Shasta both disappear, Doc navigates a psychedelic world of surfers, stoners and cops to solve the case. Based on the acclaimed novel by Thomas Pynchon.
