American Independent Film:
America's cinematic tradition has always been dominated by Hollywood and the rigid norms it has placed upon film production. Yet throughout cinema's history, there have been independent and iconoclastic filmmakers who have bucked the Hollywood system, creating both lasting works of mature art and an extraordinary aesthetic tradition. This class will explore the history of American independent film, from its very beginnings a century ago to the uncertain present moment. Participants will gain a new appreciation both for the history of this art from and for its visionary practitioners.
